US Tornadoes

Several sources including Guy carpenter are reporting on the tornadoes that have affected more than 1,000 homes in southern USA states over the weekend. Read Guy carpenter’s article here.

 

RMS reports on its website One tornado spawned by the weather system was reportedly up to a mile wide, had winds up to around 150mph (240 km/hr) and impacted an area between 50 to 75 miles in width. The state of Mississippi has been most significantly affected with 10 fatalities and 42 injuries occurring as a result of the severe weather. In total, across the state, some 700 homes have been damaged...

 

This series of tornadoes comes after a tornado outbreak earlier this year on 10 March which brought seven tornadoes to Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana and which produced the first tornado-related fatality of 2010. Another tornado outbreak followed on 28 March which was the largest of the month and brought 15 tornadoes to Florida, North and South Carolina and Virginia. The strongest tornado of this system had sustained winds of around 140mph (225 km/hr); damage was reported to hundreds of homes but there were no reported fatalities.
